Microsoft Adds AI Visibility to Clarity, Ships AI Max for Search
Apr 22, 2026
Microsoft rolled out a packed update to Bing, Copilot, and Microsoft Advertising on April 22. Two pieces matter for AI visibility specifically. An AI Visibility view inside Microsoft Clarity that shows how a brand turns up in AI answers and which content gets cited. AI Max for Search, an open pilot launching in May that expands query matching and personalizes ad delivery across Copilot and Bing.
The Clarity addition is the one to pay attention to. Until this update, the cleanest way to see whether your site was being cited by Copilot or other Bing-powered AI answers required either paying for a third-party visibility tracker or stitching together logs by hand. Clarity is free. Adding citation analysis to it lowers the floor for any business that already runs Microsoft analytics, which is most of them.
AI Max for Search ads goes the other direction. Instead of telling you whether you’re getting cited, it expands your reach by personalizing ads inside AI surfaces, including Copilot conversations. New “Offer Highlights” formats surface things like free shipping inside an AI chat, which is Microsoft betting that paid placements will live alongside organic AI citations rather than replacing them.
Underneath both is the Universal Commerce Protocol in Microsoft Merchant Center, structuring product data so AI agents can discover and transact on it. The agentic web isn’t a future tense thing anymore. It’s a feature in your ad dashboard.
For sites already optimizing for ChatGPT and Gemini citations, this is a reminder that Bing’s index still matters. ChatGPT pulls from it, and Copilot is its own answer surface. Don’t ignore the Microsoft side.
