ChatGPT Reads Reddit Heavily, Rarely Cites It, Ahrefs Data Shows

Ahrefs released data this week showing a split most of the SEO industry hadn’t expected. ChatGPT retrieves Reddit content at high volumes during its answer-generation process. Reddit URLs appear as visible citations rarely, according to the report.
The gap matters because it changes the GEO playbook for B2B brands that have been investing in Reddit presence specifically to win ChatGPT citations. Retrieval and citation are different steps in the model’s answer flow. A source can inform an answer without ever being named as the reference. Brands chasing Reddit visibility were optimizing for the wrong half of the funnel.
That doesn’t mean Reddit presence is useless. It still shapes what ChatGPT “knows” about a brand. It just doesn’t produce the clickable citation moments teams have been counting on when they built out their subreddit-answer content calendars.
