Canva's AI Assistant Can Now Call Other Tools to Build Designs Autonomously

Apr 16, 2026

Canva rolled out an upgrade to its AI assistant on April 16. The assistant can now call multiple Canva tools (Magic Design, background remover, text effects, template search) autonomously inside a single prompt, completing multi-step design tasks that previously required the user to orchestrate each step manually.

The pattern matches the broader 2026 trend of agentic capability inside consumer and SMB tools. What used to be “type a prompt, get a result” becomes “state a goal, the assistant plans the steps and executes them.” Canva is playing the same move Microsoft played with Copilot and Google played with Gemini, just in the design tools category.

For small business owners using Canva for marketing design, the upgrade is useful. Specific-ask prompts like “create a four-panel Instagram carousel announcing our summer sale” now work end to end. For teams with actual designers, the agentic workflow is a productivity aid, not a replacement. Which is what designers have been saying about every AI design tool since DALL-E and will probably keep saying until the tools get substantially better.
